Home Why CMS Site Design

hi!

Why would Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal be better suited than a site coded just for you.

You can talk to a website development group and have a site designed for you and coded from scratch.  Depending on how complex your site needs to be that can be a large cost to you and or your company.  But what are the aspects you will encounter to this approach:

1. The process usually involved and time consuming.

2. Depending on who you choose to build the site you may or may not end up with what you wanted.

3. You will end up with a static site which would not allow for easy editing of content.

4. If changes are necesary you will need to use a web developer to make the changes on your site.

5. The ability to add featureas like a blog or sotial networking will cost you for development time.

6. If needed additional developement could take days if not weeks IF your developer is or is not responsive.

7. You will not have the ability to edit your site realtime.

8. If the developer has set up your domain and or your server, you may not have direct access to those files on your site.  thereby no control of your domain.

Over the years many new ways of building a site has developed.  You now have the ability to use some services that allow you to build a site on your own with little or no experiance.  But this apprach usually ends in disapointment as well cause you realize that knowledge of web development would go a long way towards making the site you really want build but do not have the time to learn web design and coding is just not your cup of tea.

Wikiedia discription of CMS programs and basic features explained:

WordPress
is an open source Content Management System (CMS), often used as a blog publishing application, powered by PHP and MySQL. It has many features including a plug-in architecture and a template system. Used by over 12% of the 1,000,000 biggest websites, WordPress is the most popular CMS in use today.[3]

It was first released on May 27, 2003, by Matt Mullenweg[1] as a fork of b2/cafelog. As of August 2010, version 3.0 had been downloaded over 12.5 million times.[4]

Joomla
is a free and open source content management system (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets. It comprises a model–view–controller (MVC) Web application framework that can also be used independently.

Joomla is written in PHP, uses object-oriented programming (OOP) techniques and software design patterns, stores data in a MySQL database, and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, and support for language internationalization.

Within its first year of release, Joomla had been downloaded 2.5 million times.[citation needed] There are over 6,000 free and commercial plug-ins available from the official Joomla! Extension Directory and even more available from other sources.

You can type the word "joomla" into Google.com to have Google return about 108,000,000 pages. That in itself is a telling message. Perhaps no surprise then that Joomla is now the most popular web Content Management System in the world.

Drupal
(pronunciation: /?dru?p?l/) is a free and open source content management system (CMS) written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License.[1][2][3] It is used as a back-end system for at least 1% of all websites worldwide[4] ranging from personal blogs to corporate, political, and government sites including whitehouse.gov and data.gov.uk.[5][6] It is also used for knowledge management and business collaboration.

The standard release of Drupal, known as Drupal core, contains basic features common to CMSs. These include user account registration and maintenance, menu management, RSS-feeds, page layout customization, and system administration. The Drupal core installation can be used as a brochureware website, a single- or multi-user blog, an Internet forum, or a community website providing for user-generated content.

Over 7000 (as of November 2010) free community-contributed addons, known as contrib modules, are available to alter and extend Drupal's core capabilities and add new features or customize Drupal's behavior and appearance. Because of this plug-in extensibility and modular design, Drupal is sometimes described as a content management framework.[2][7] Drupal is also described as a web application framework, as it meets the generally accepted feature requirements for such frameworks.

Although Drupal offers a sophisticated programming interface for developers, no programming skills are required for basic website installation and administration.[8]

Drupal runs on any computing platform that supports both a web server capable of running PHP 4.4.0+ (including Apache, IIS, Lighttpd, and nginx) and a database (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or SQLite) to store content and settings. Drupal 7 requires PHP 5.2 or higher.[3]
